Jared Seyl Denver: Three Non-profits With Flexible Working Options

If you are concerned about making a difference in the lives of others, a non-profit career might be for you. While most non-profit jobs involve having to go on the field or working directly with communities, most of them place a lot of emphasis on work-life balance. Many non-profit organizations offer flexible working options. There are job openings for those who’d rather work part-time, remotely, or on a short-term basis.

1. 350.org. This organization seeks to address climate change by lowering atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. It is involved in a number of activities and projects that seek to raise awareness of climate change, such as the Summer Heat campaign, the International Day of Climate Action, the People’s Climate March, and community grassroots campaigns. 350.org hires remote workers within the U.S. and in other countries where it has a presence. They are looking for grant writers, digital directors, and fundraising managers who have the discipline for remote working.

2. Sierra Club. Founded by naturalist John Muir in 1892, the Sierra Club has one of the largest membership bases among non-profits, with over 3 million members as of 2016. It is known as a mountaineering and rock climbing organization and organizes hikes and mountain expeditions for its members. Lately, they have also been more involved in the fight against climate change and the use of coal and nuclear power and have been promoting solar and wind energy. Because of the organization’s wide membership that spans the entire U.S., it is hiring people who are willing to work remotely, including community organizers and development coordinators.

3. Doctors Without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontieres. The winner of the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize, Doctors Without Borders provides medical care to groups and individuals who have little access to nutrition and healthcare and those who are affected by natural disasters and epidemics. Because they operate in over 60 countries, many of which are located in Africa, they are looking for individuals who could speak French and Arabic. In the past, they have hired freelancers and temporary workers, including events coordinators, copywriters, and data entry assistants.
